New Zealand is a beautiful country, with rolling, verdant green hills and mountains as far as the eyes could see, and snow-capped, craggy peaks that reflect on clear lakes. Explore this rough, rugged and raw terrain on a truck, van or any type of vehicle to get the most out of your visit.
Here are some ideas for your next trip to New Zealand:
The Loop of Bay of Islands and Auckland
Most visitors who lack time do this road trip when they visit the country. Start your adventure with a car rental in Auckland, and then leave the city to the northern coast’s great outdoors. Along the way, you may see dolphins swimming in the Bay of Islands, after which, you will see beaches along Omapere.
If you are lucky, you may encounter some blue penguins or even whales during your trip. Ideally, allot at least a week to do the loop and enjoy the places you will visit; the best part about this is that you can do it year-round.
Auckland to Wellington
Another route you can take is from Auckland to Wellington and back. Make your first stop Hobbiton, from the Lord of the Rings fame, and then drive to Rotorua and Lake Taupo, which is a volcanic crater lake. Pass through the Thermal Highway for a variety of geothermal wonders, such as geysers. Some of the highlights include the Tongariro Lakes Crossing, one of the best day walks in the country, and Mt. Ngauruhoe, or famously known as Mt. Doom.
Christchurch to Queenstown
This is the go-to road trip route for those who do not have much time to explore the South Island. This will take you through scenic routes with spectacular landscapes, the highlights of which are the Haast Pass and the Franz Joseph Glaciers.
New Zealand has an effective transportation system that takes you from city to city; however, you cannot just ask the bus to stop and wait for you. That is why renting a car and driving on your own is an ideal option to see the best of what the country has to offer.
